Matthew Moy Named Chief of Musculoskeletal Radiology
Matthew Moy, MD, has been named chief of the Division of Musculoskeletal Radiology for the Department of Radiology at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S). Moy’s appointment continues Columbia’s strong tradition of excellence in diagnostic and therapeutic care of patients with bone, joint, spine, and soft tissue diseases at Columbia.
Moy is a board-certified radiologist specializing in musculoskeletal imaging. He joined Columbia Radiology in 2017 and has been serving as interim division chief since April of this year. His appointment as division chief is effective immediately.
“Dr. Matt Moy is a superb musculoskeletal radiologist who has contributed immeasurably to our department since he joined our faculty, with his efforts benefiting patients, trainees, and our referring clinicians alike," said Ajay Gupta, MD, MS, James Picker Professor of Radiology and chair of the Department of Radiology. "I’m delighted he has accepted this important leadership role, where he will help advance musculoskeletal radiology across our core mission areas—clinical care, education, and research—in the years to come.”
In addition to his deep clinical expertise, Moy has also made extensive contributions to the Department of Radiology’s educational mission. He significantly expanded medical student and resident education in musculoskeletal radiology and served as a lecturer of anatomy for medical physicists and engineers at Columbia Engineering from 2020 to 2022. Most recently, he developed Columbia Radiology’s Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellowship, which accepted its first trainee in 2024. Moy will serve as fellowship director for the 2025-26 academic year.
At Columbia, Moy will lead an exceptional group of radiologists who share a history of excellence in their field, beginning with the establishment of the division under Frieda Feldman, MD, a luminary of musculoskeletal radiology and founder of the International Skeletal Society. Currently, the division provides diagnostic imaging for professional and collegiate sports teams throughout the the New York City area, as well as a range of image-guided injections and minimally invasive pain management procedures. Radiologists in the division collaborate closely with Columbia’s renowned orthopedists, spine surgeons, physiatrists, and oncologists to provide coordinated care for patients with musculoskeletal issues.
“I’m excited to grow the musculoskeletal radiology division at every level as our department expands,” said Moy. “First and foremost, we will continue to deliver the best care that we can offer to our patients, and then I look forward to building our research and trainee education offerings through growing a diversified faculty.”
Moy earned his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, followed by residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH)/Harvard Medical School, where he served as chief resident. He continued at MGH for two years of fellowship training in both abdominal imaging and musculoskeletal imaging.
