Panagiotis Kapetas, MD, PHD

Panagiotis Kapetas, MD, PhD is a board-certified radiologist specializing in breast imaging. He is dedicated to providing compassionate, patient-centered care while using the latest advances in breast imaging to deliver accurate diagnoses and guide personalized treatment. Dr. Kapetas has expertise across the full spectrum of breast imaging, with a particular focus on breast ultrasound, advanced imaging techniques, and multimodality imaging. He works closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure that each patient receives individualized care informed by the most current evidence and technology.

Dr. Kapetas's research focuses on advancing breast imaging through innovative imaging techniques and artificial intelligence. He is internationally recognized for his work in breast ultrasound and has contributed to the establishment of multiparametric breast ultrasound as a clinical approach to improve the characterization of breast lesions and optimize patient management. His research also explores hybrid breast imaging with PET/MRI, investigating novel imaging tracers to better understand breast cancer biology, predict treatment response, and support precision medicine. In addition, he is actively developing and integrating artificial intelligence into breast imaging, particularly breast ultrasound, while pursuing multimodal AI models that combine imaging and clinical data to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes.

An accomplished investigator, Dr. Kapetas has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications that have been cited nearly 2,000 times. He has delivered more than 30 scientific presentations at international conferences, and several of his publications and presentations have received prestigious international awards. He is a frequent invited speaker at scientific meetings worldwide and serves on the Executive Board and Scientific Committee of the Hellenic Breast Imaging Society. He has also served multiple times on the Austrian Committee for Board Examinations in Radiology.

Dr. Kapetas earned his medical degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece, where he also completed his radiology residency and served as chief resident. After a clinical observership in the Division of Breast and Gender Imaging at the Medical University of Vienna, he joined the faculty of the Department of Biomedical Imaging and Image-Guided Therapy, where he later served as Vice Chair of the Breast Imaging Service. He earned his PhD from the Medical University of Vienna for his research on multiparametric breast ultrasound and subsequently completed a breast imaging research fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
