Stephen Reis Appointed Chief of Interventional Radiology
Stephen Reis, MD, has been named chief of the Division of Interventional Radiology at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S). Reis’s appointment strengthens Columbia’s strong tradition of excellence in the development and application of imaging to guide minimally invasive techniques utilized in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of conditions.
Reis is a board-certified interventional radiologist who also serves as program director for the Interventional Radiology Integrated Residency. His appointment as division chief is effective immediately.
“Dr. Reis is a talented physician, educator, and leader who has made meaningful contributions across every aspect of our department,” said Ajay Gupta, MD, MS, James Picker Professor of Radiology and chair of the Department of Radiology. “He brings a thoughtful, patient-centered approach to care and a strong commitment to clinical excellence. I’m pleased that he will be stepping into this new leadership role, where he will further strengthen our world class interventional radiology clinical programs and help expand our impact in education, research, and multidisciplinary care.”
In addition to his deep clinical expertise, Reis has made extensive contributions to the Department of Radiology’s research, quality improvement, and education missions since he joined Columbia in 2016. He has transformed the five-year Interventional Radiology Integrated Residency during his tenure as program director, through an emphasis on work life balance, business education, and implementing programs designed to better integrate interventional radiology into the early years of residency training.
Reis has also participated in multiple national clinical trials that investigate expanded uses of cutting-edge minimally invasive treatments for cancer and other conditions.
“I’m looking forward to continuing the work of my predecessors and further strengthening the clinical services we provide to our colleagues across Columbia University Irving Medical Center,” Reis said. “I’m also excited to increase our division’s involvement in research and education, with many new faculty who are eager and motivated to participate.”
Reis will lead an exceptional group of interventional radiologists who collaborate with specialist teams across Columbia and NewYork-Presbyterian to provide minimally invasive treatments for everything from cancer to arthritis of the knee. Members of the division lead some of Columbia’s unique multidisciplinary centers, including the HHT Center of Excellence and the Vascular Anomalies Program, as well as a dedicated pediatric interventional radiology service at NewYork-Presbyterian’s Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. The group also provides consultations and performs procedures in outpatient offices in midtown Manhattan and Westchester County.
Reis completed his medical school training at New York Medical College. His post-graduate training includes a diagnostic radiology residency at Westchester Medical Center and a vascular-interventional radiology fellowship at the UT Southwestern Medical Center and Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. He remained on faculty at UT Southwestern until he was recruited by Columbia Radiology for his expertise in cancer care.
